Job Description

Are you passionate about helping to connect the dots between information management and organisational strategy? Do you have a gift for distilling complex information into a form that others can easily understand?  Would you like to be at the epicentre of ensuring data can be utilised to inform key strategic projects that are going on at the Ministry for Primary Industries?

The Ministry for Primary Industries works to better support, connect and strengthen primary industries in order to grow and protect New Zealand for all. Within MPI, the Data and Information team provide the advice, tools, processes and standards to make it easier to access, use and get value from Ministry data. We get excited about helping people to re-use data in more efficient, creative and innovative ways and seeing people realise the benefits of effective use of data.

Reporting to the Manager Information and Data Management, you will work with managers and senior leaders to provide strategic and operational management to lift the Ministry's overall capability around data and information. Working collaboratively will be second nature as you as you will also work closely with, and draw from the experience of the talented geospatial, business intelligence and information management analysts who make up the wider team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to have an organisation-wide impact by helping to lead strategic projects across the Ministry in relation to information and data. It offers variety and challenge including the chance to shape our Open Data Programme, lead and develop MPIs data and information strategy and embed data stewardship to help grow data maturity across the organisation.

You will also be working at a governance level. You will play a critical role in supporting our Data Working Group and will thrive on being the go-to persons for providing advice and support for information and data programmes, initiatives and strategies.

Ideally you will have a background of working with information and data, this may be as a technical specialist or you may have a background where data and information play a critical role in the work you do. We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Sound understanding of data stewardship, data governance and related disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience in communications and relationship management for a strategic initiative
  • Demonstrated expertise in data or information management
  • Knowledge of strategic and business planning processes
