Job Description

We are looking for a Principal Adviser Public Health to advise MPI on public health as applied to food safety, food suitability and biosecurity.

This is an exciting role within MPI where you would be responsible for providing the human health leadership and expert face to MPI. Being the lead in Public Health for MPI you will manage the key public health relationships for the ministry.

The Principal Adviser (Public Health) is a senior position designed to allow a clinician to use their expertise to advise MPI on public health as applied to food safety, food suitability and biosecurity. This role provides the public health specialist advice necessary to inform the research and science activities for the development of MPI standards and other domestic and international regulatory activities, and to food and biosecurity incident response activities, as appropriate.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing critical science and public health advice on food borne illness outbreaks
  • Science and public health advice on food and biosecurity issues where there is potential impact on human health
  • Input on public health policies
  • Maintaining communications and credibility with the public health national network
  • Assistance with MPI public messaging and risk communication

Skills and experience required:

  • Up-to-date knowledge in public health, food and biosecurity issues.
  • Strong knowledge on international and national trends in foodborne and emergent diseases
  • Experience with food and biosecurity incidents at the national/regional level
  • Experience with global public health bodies in relation to food safety and biosecurity
  • General knowledge of the regulatory food safety and biosecurity environments
  • Experience in managing inter-government relationships
  • A medical degree with appropriate tertiary qualifications in public health
  • Fellowship of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine (or equivalent)
