The Ministry for Primary Industries' purpose is to grow and protect New Zealand. We work to achieve growth, sustainability, protection and participation.


The role works with the team developing Policy and designing and implementing Digital Monitoring for the commercial fishing fleet. Digital Monitoring covers catch and position reporting plus cameras on vessels to verify catch information. The successful candidate will work closely with the Programme team responsible for the Policy and Digital Monitoring work and also with colleagues in the Communications, Engagement & Channels Directorate to communicate one of the issues that New Zealanders care about deeply – shared fisheries that are sustainable now and into the future.


We're looking for someone with a proven track-record for effective communications, a keen eye for opportunity and risk as well as an ability to effectively manage a busy and varied workload. This role offers complexity and challenge, so you will need to be adaptable and innovative to thrive in this environment.


To succeed in this position, you will need to demonstrate:

  • A broad general communications background
  • A proven track record working with news media and actively managing outcomes
  • Experience working in fact paced transformation Programmes
  • Strategic nous and tactical know-how
