Job Description

The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for a vibrant high performer to join its Food Assurance team as a Senior Adviser.  This team is responsible for ensuring that all of MPI's food systems are working so that New Zealanders can have trust and confidence in the safety and suitability of food.

This critically important role interacts with industry regularly as importers email or call to obtain clarification or to receive guidance about import standards.  Utilising their technical knowledge, a Senior Adviser would be contribute to setting import standards, implementing them through other MPI teams and monitoring their effectiveness.

The Senior Adviser will be part of a small team looking after the imports system. You will need to understand our international obligations and trade relations to be effective in this area. You would take ownership of a portion of the system, including continuous improvement and overseeing implementation of those improvements.  If you are an individual who can create as well as implement – you will thrive in this role! 

Your stakeholder engagement skills will be utilised regularly as you work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the system is risk-based, practical, and effective.  As a “go-to” person for technical advice on imports, you will thrive in an environment where you are leading, instructing, and clarifying. 

The Senior Adviser will also set up performance monitoring of the food businesses and the verifiers of those businesses under the Food Act 2014 to ensure that the requirements have been implemented effectively.  There is other work to complete the implementation of the Food Act 2014 which is still in transition.

The position is full-time, based in Wellington in the Systems Audit, Assurance and Monitoring Directorate within MPI's Regulation and Assurance branch.  This branch contains MPI's core regulatory functions.  It provides the requisite confidence, transparency and trust to domestic and overseas consumers, overseas regulators and the primary industries as to the credibility, integrity and strength of our regulatory settings and systems for biosecurity, food safety and primary production (including animal welfare and fisheries management).

To be successful in the role you should have:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. food technology, microbiology, veterinary or science degree)
  • appropriate knowledge of New Zealand's primary production and processing of animals
  • knowledge of food safety and an understanding of food processing
  • familiarity with New Zealand's regulatory systems and legislation – particularly the Food Act 2014 and the Food Standards Code.
  • experience in the development of implementation tools (such as guidance documents and templates) to help implement requirements.
