Job Description

  • Interesting work with an international focus
  • Work on front page issues
  • Contribute to the competitiveness of New Zealand's primary sectors

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen! MPI also provides a range of services to ensure New Zealand is protected from biological risk and that the food New Zealand businesses produce is safe and suitable for us all to consume. MPI's services ensure that New Zealand's natural resources are sustainable while enabling the primary sector to innovate and grow the value of its exports. Our overall ambition is for New Zealand to be the most trusted source of high value natural products in the world. Join us to help this ambition become a reality.

About our team

The Trade Policy team at MPI provides leadership in trade policy and international engagement where primary industry interests are unique (for example, in pursuit of international agricultural policy reform,).  We engage in negotiation in bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral contexts and provide technical expertise in understanding the specifics required to address particular trade issues relevant to the primary sectors, for example, understanding of tariff quota management systems.  We also support implementation of New Zealand's commitments under various trade agreements and policies and programmes that support growth in primary sector trade.

About the role/s

Due to some internal movements, promotions and some of our team taking up overseas positions we have two positions available for eager entry to mid level policy analysts. You may be a current Policy Analyst looking to add experience in international and trade policy to your CV or a recent graduate with a great understanding of New Zealand's primary sectors.   We look for people from an analytical background with relevant qualifications that are fast learners, can take on feedback, are flexible in style and have a strong interest in the growth and development of New Zealand's primary sectors.

How / why to apply?

Our work stretches all the way from the Beehive to the border. If you want a career where you help to grow and protect New Zealand in a very real way then this could be it. Our team is collegial, supportive and hard working. MPI has a focus on career pathways so take this first step in your careers with us and we will help you grow.

To view the position description and/or apply for the role (submitting a cover letter and current curriculum vitae), please click on “APPLY NOW” in order to be directed to our website.

For internal candidates please make sure your current manager is aware of your application. Please note this is an opportunity to move into trade policy at your current level.

If you have any questions about the role, please contact Matt Brown, Senior Recruitment Adviser on 04 894 0258 or matt.brown@mpi.govt.nz

Applications close: Friday 25 May 2018
