Job Description

  • Influence the shape of critical policy areas that grow and protect New Zealand
  • Work in a collegial and supportive team environment.
  • Permanent opportunity

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'.  It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen! MPI provides a range of services to ensure New Zealand is protected from biological risk and that the food New Zealand businesses produce is safe and suitable for us all to consume.  Our overall ambition is for New Zealand to be the most trusted source of high value natural products in the world.  Join us to help this ambition become a reality.

About the team

The Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Directorate leads the provision of strategic and policy advice to the Minister and senior managers.  Our work stretches from the Beehive to the border and beyond, and spans the length and breadth of the country.  To do this we work collaboratively across MPI, other government departments and with stakeholders.  You will be joining a great group of people and have the opportunity to influence the shape of critical policy areas that grow and protect New Zealand.

About the role

You will need to be a skilled communicator capable of working with a range of people with different backgrounds, perspectives and interests.  You will enjoy working in a busy team within a sometimes complex and ambiguous policy environment.  Strong creative problem solving skills will be necessary.

Previous experience in primary industries is not essential.  We are after your ability as an analyst and your interest in the environment in which our primary producers operate.

To be successful in this role you need:

-        Previous experience as policy analyst or in a similar working environment

-        Strong analytical skills

-        A capacity to quickly identify and clearly express core elements of an issue or proposal

-        The ability to find policy solutions and think broadly

-        Strong oral and written presentation skills

-        The ability to influence and persuade, using a variety of techniques

To join the team as a Senior Policy Analyst you will need to have substantial policy experience.  You will need to be comfortable leading policy processes and coaching and mentoring more junior analysts.
