  • Are you a smart generalist with a flair for problem solving and delivering results?

  • Do you enjoy variety and the chance to make a difference across an entire organisation?

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!  This is your opportunity to join us.

About our team

The Strategy Directorate has a focus on implementing MPI's strategy and aligning MPI. It does this by working across the whole organisation. The Directorate partners with others to set the organisational direction; enables others to deliver the work needed to achieve organisational goals, and assesses how MPI is delivering against its strategy.

The Directorate provides advice on MPI's direction, resource use and performance to the Director-General and Senior Leadership Team, and works with others on initiatives to develop the culture and capabilities that MPI will need to be a pre-eminent organisation.

Within the Directorate, the Strategy Implementation and Performance team leads MPI's corporate governance function, running governance boards and other key forums for decision making and connecting the organisation nationwide.  The team also leads a range of special projects to optimise MPI's organisational and strategic performance now and for the future.

About the role

You will support key decision makers as a trusted advisor to MPI's governance board chairs and members.  This gives you rare insight into the heart of our organisation's workings plus the opportunity to work closely with senior leaders and other professionals.  You will work on a diverse range of complex issues, providing effective analysis and advice.  You will also lead or support the delivery of strategic initiatives and other high priority work to ensure MPI's structure and operation is fit for purpose now and for the future.

About you

To join us you will need:

  • a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • advanced listening, presenting and writing skills, and experience in using them to build credibility
  • comfort operating in a senior management environment
  • flexibility and persistence, coupled with maturity and pragmatism
  • strong analytical skills
  • some experience in an organisation-wide or governance context would be an advantage

How / why to apply?

Our work stretches all the way from the Beehive to the border. If you want a career where you help to grow and protect New Zealand in a very real way then this is it. Our team is collegial, supportive and hard working. MPI has a focus on career pathways so this is the first step in your career with us and we will help you grow.
