Job Description

  • Exciting and varied tier 3 leadership opportunity
  • Enhance commercial performance of Crown Forestry assets
  • Seat at the Te Uru Rākau leadership table

Forestry is one of this country's most successful primary industries. Te Uru Rākau – Forestry New Zealand, within the Ministry for Primary Industries, builds on this success to create a sustainable and innovative sector that continues to grow and adapt.  In joining Te Uru Rākau, you will be part of a dynamic team with diverse responsibilities who all share the common goal of improving the social, environmental and economic outcomes for New Zealand.

This influential position is responsible for managing Crown Forestry's Assets in Te Uru Rākau. Wellington based, you will be leading a small dynamic team responsible for managing the crown interests in forestry leases on Maori land, residual crown forests and entering into new government joint ventures as part of the One Billion Trees programme.

As the successful appointee, you will enhance the commercial performance of the Crown Forestry business and will foster a culture to enable the delivery of the government's objectives for Forestry. You will be committed to achieve the best return for stakeholders while meeting the required legal obligations. You will also lead high level engagement and collaboration across government and industry.

To be credible in this role, you will offer:

  • Relevant senior management experience in commercial forestry management
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with Maori
  • Superior people leadership with proven capability and delivery in large scale programmes

  • An in-depth understanding of relevant New Zealand legislation
  • Strong financial management and negotiation skills
  • Experience with government and ministers is desirable but not essential

Optimising the commercial potential of our forestry assets while also being innovative and future focused is no mean feat. Therefore we are looking for both a pragmatist and a thought leader to show the way as we establish as a business unit and deliver on our work programmes.
