Job Description

  • High profile, fast paced and exciting work
  • Represent New Zealand's interests in international fisheries
  • MPI supports a range of flexible working options

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!

About our team

MPI represents New Zealand on a number of international fisheries issues.  We work closely with international and New Zealand government organisations (especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) to maximise economic and other benefits to New Zealand from international fisheries, while protecting the environment and meeting international obligations. Our team leads engagement on many international fisheries issues, regulates New Zealand fishing vessels on the high seas and provides specialist policy advice and guidance to other agencies.

About the role

We are seeking a Senior/Policy Analyst to contribute to MPI's fisheries trade policy work.  This will include developing and implementing international trade agreements that reflect New Zealand's fisheries interests, such as in the WTO and FTAs, and contributing to the policy work of the OECD and APEC.  The successful candidate will also contribute to the team's wider work across a range of areas, including New Zealand's engagement in regional fisheries management organisations and United Nations processes.  Occasional travel is likely to be necessary in addition to developing policy advice, drafting briefings, and reporting to international organisations in collaboration with other parts of MPI and other agencies, and working across MPI teams to implement New Zealand's international obligations.

Understanding the interface between fisheries policy, fisheries management and trade policy is key to the role.  While fisheries experience is not essential, experience in dealing with economic or trade policy and natural resource management and policy is desirable, as is an understanding of the Law of the Sea and related agreements. We are looking for a good team player who will be able to forge strong working relationships across the public sector and beyond.   Strong communication skills and experience in briefing Ministers would be an advantage.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a policy area that has direct economic and environmental value to New Zealand.  It is high profile, fast paced and exciting work.  If you are up for the challenge, we want to hear from you.

How / why to apply?

Our work stretches all the way from the Beehive to beyond the border. If you want a career where you help to grow and protect New Zealand and support sustainable fisheries in a very real way then this is it. Our team is collegial, supportive and hard working. MPI has a focus on career pathways so we will help you grow.
