About MPI


The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand'. It's no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!


About the role and our team

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy Team provides advice on customary, recreational, commercial and environmental issues. We lead a range of evidence-based policy initiatives covering marine and freshwater, working with other Government agencies, iwi and engaging with a range of stakeholders both in Wellington and around New Zealand. Our work involves advising on topics such as:


  • Fisheries management system reform
  • Environmental initiatives such as marine protection reform
  • Fisheries Treaty settlements for iwi
  • Supporting aquaculture development
  • Providing high-profile analysis and advice on a range of other fisheries issues, contracting socio-economic research and conducting public      consultation.
