About our Team:

The Government Health and Safety Lead (GHSL) provides practical support to chief executives and senior leaders of government agencies to enable their personal leadership of health and safety for the benefit of all New Zealanders. We work with 37 public service and other government agencies to support sharing of proactive and joined up resources, strengthen system capability and build cross-system relationships.

 

About the Role:

The Principal Adviser is responsible for leading or supporting Government Health and Safety Lead initiatives and projects such as the development of health and safety resources for the government sector.

You will be the subject matter expert on Health & Safety matters managing large sector initiatives, using project management disciplines including project planning, stakeholder engagement and change management.

You will capturing data on performance and maturity of the sector and reporting back on your findings whilst also developing and maintaining relationships with key partners such as agency Health & Safety Leads and industry influencers, there will be a high level of consultation involved in the position.

 

Skills and Experience:

The successful candidate will have previous experience in developing sector Health and Safety guidance material, preferably across the public sector. You will need to be efficient at building relationships with key stakeholders and working closely with people across different areas.

You will also be skilled in research and application of good Health and Safety practices, guiding and mentoring junior staff in delivering work streams and have great written and verbal communication skills.

To succeed in this position, you will need to demonstrate:

  • Relevant Health & Safety qualifications and professional membership
  • Experience collaborating and consulting with multiple government departments on mechanisms to improve Health and Safety outcomes
  • Strong relationship building, communication and management skills
  • Experience collating, interpreting and presenting data
  • Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
