About the team

Our Policy and Trade branch provides strategic thinking, policy advice and analysis, negotiates market access arrangements and oversees international government-to-government relationships to maximise export opportunities across New Zealand's primary sector.  We are a talented and motivated team who focus on sustainable economic growth, resource management, protecting New Zealand from biological risk and engaging on other big issues of interest to New Zealand's primary sector.

About the role

This position is crucial to the success of the Policy & Trade Branch. The Chief Adviser will drive the policy focus and prioritisation for the Branch, ensuring we're putting our energy into the right areas. They will find ways through complex problems and also act as a system builder, developing and driving quality and accountability.

This role will be split between carrying out priority work for the Deputy Director General (DDG) and guiding directorates in the Policy & Trade Branch to shape significant pieces of policy advice. We're looking for someone with highly adaptable strategic and intellectual leadership, and the ability to trouble-shoot. This role will offer you variety and stretch as you steer multiple work streams and work with senior leaders across MPI.

To be successful in this role, you will have;

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of excellent stakeholder management skills
  • A large work capacity and outstanding organisational skills
  • Ability to identify and prioritise
  • Ability to establish networks across Policy & Trade and MPI
  • Experience navigating the machinery of government
  • The ability to influence across an organisation
  • A background in policy, economics or an equivalent role
  • A passion for primary industries
