Senior Spatial Intelligence Analyst at Ministry for Primary Industries, Wellington City

Location: Wellington, Auckland, Rotorua or Gisborne - remote locations may also be considered 

Contract: Permanent - full time

Salary: $77,000 to $105,000, dependent on skills and experience

Be part of the Spatial Intelligence team working to support the regulatory and policy objectives of the forestry industry and the Emissions Trading Scheme via spatial data analysis and mapping products for internal and external stakeholders.

Lead key GIS initiatives to deliver business objectives and provide GIS intellectual leadership and acumen.

About the Role│Kōrero mō te tūranga

 In joining our focussed Spatial Intelligence team, you will work with our internal customers across the Ministry and provide spatial data analysis to inform on a range of organisation delivery decisions. You will develop spatial models, undertake imagery analysis, assist in developing spatial tools, and provide sound advice involving a variety of themes, e.g. freshwater, sustainable fisheries or land use, forestry investments, nationwide responses, biosecurity readiness and response, food safety, and agriculture. You will also get the chance to get involved in large new spatial initiatives across the Ministry for which you will bring your experience and ideas. 

As a key member of the Spatial Intelligence team, you will have the opportunity to lead projects of national significance making a real difference to New Zealand. Our full-time positions are permanent roles and will best suit proactive and motivated professionals with 3-5 years of experience with GIS and an advanced GIS education or skillset.

Core responsibilities for the role(s):

  • build and sustain positive relations with internal and external stakeholders;
  • develop spatial business requirements and effectively translate these requirements into meaningful outcomes;
  • apply spatial analysis and your general GIS skills to assist with primary industry related applications in the forestry or marine space;
  • assist in the investigation and creation of technical solutions (e.g. scripting, automation, web applications) to aid in efficient data use and analysis methodologies;
  • participate actively in GIS projects as assigned, including undertaking planning, delegations and time estimates;
  • apply independent initiative, critical thinking and problem solving, and produce high quality reports, analysis, and cartographic and infographic products to support the Ministry

Working with stakeholders and within the existing team to provide sound advice and spatial analysis requires a unique set of skills. Bring your great communication skills and analytical thinking to help solve problems, inform decision making, and thus add value to our service delivery.

To be successful in this role you will offer:

  • skills in the use of the ESRI software suite including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Mobile Applications, ArcSDE, and ArcGIS Server;
  • demonstrated advanced analytical skills in reviewing, recording and synthesising information from numerous sources to inform decision making;
  • the ability to use and apply associated software tools including Python, R, SQL, and/or FME
  • demonstrated experience in supporting and developing practical GIS applications
  • experience in interpreting legislations and regulations to manage and analyse spatial data
  • the ability to interpret aerial photography and multi-spectral satellite imagery
