About the Role│Kōrero mō te tūranga

Our Senior FMA Analyst works as a technical leader and is responsible for overseeing the operation of the Field Measurement Approach (FMA). The FMA is the key component ensuring the accuracy of the unit allocated to over 80% of the forest land in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). 

The focus of the role is to process forestry inventory data, provide advice, and support the operation of the FMA components of the ETS under the Climate Change Response Act (CCRA).

 What you will do:

You will have the opportunity to lead the implementation of a world-leading, national-scale forest carbon assessment approach. This will include identifying opportunities to enhance the technical operation of the approach and working to improve the regulatory and operational policies around its use.

The Field Measurement Approach (FMA) is a national-scale measurement-based approach to forest carbon assessment under the ETS. Across the current 5year period we expect around 30,000 sample plots to be measured by forestry participants, and submitted to us for processing.

Post-1989 forests registered in the ETS sequester some 6 million tonnes of CO₂ annually valued at approximately $460 million. This sequestration is a major contributor to lowering New Zealand's domestic net Greenhouse Gas emissions, and enabling us to achieve the Zero Carbon by 2050 goal.

In this role you will have the opportunity to:

• Become the technical leader on operational matters relating to forestry in the NZETS, including implementation to service new Legislation and Regulations on forest carbon accounting/reporting.Provide technical knowledge and input for forest inventory, forest growth modelling, carbon allocation, and the operation of the FMA to produce carbon yield tables for NZETS participants
• Ensure continuity for on-going technical operation and enhancement of the FMA, including business process and software development to support existing and new functionality
• Collaborate externally with stakeholders in Government and the private sector to share subject matter expertise and establish yourself as a trusted adviser with the forestry sector
• Contribute to the direction of the climate change operations environment and lead the deliver on all aspects of carbon accounting and reporting for forestry participants under the NZETS, on behalf of the New Zealand Government

About You│Mōu

Ideally you will bring your mix of unique skills, and technical knowledge, including experience using modelling and statistical principals. You will have an inquisitive nature, and a willingness to explore ways to help lead the way as we seek to realise the potential of forest carbon in supporting our emissions reductions targets.

 You will also have:

• Strong technical knowledge and experience in large-scale modelling and be familiar with the associated science and technology.
• Experience in operational data analysis, interpretation, and quality assurance, and in providing technical solutions, advice and training.
• Knowledge of forest growth modelling and carbon accounting is an advantage, as is experience with specification and development of technical software. Knowledge of GIS and image interpretation is also an advantage although not a requirement for the role.
