Senior Adviser – Operational Research
This is an opportunity to take up a key role in the Operational Research team. This is a fast-paced, interesting role that will help deliver science to fill knowledge gaps, mitigate risks and strengthen the evidence used for decision-making at MPI.
Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
We are looking for either a scientist keen to develop commercial expertise and experience, or a commercial specialist interested in developing their knowledge of commercial science research contracts, with the opportunity for deep dives into science. Your focus will depend on the expertise you bring to the role, but you can expect to develop across both areas. This role is fixed term to February 2023.
You will provide scientific and/or procurement and commercial advice into all aspects of the Biosecurity, Food Safety and Animal Welfare operational research programmes. This includes oversight of proposal preparation, as well as programme prioritisation and contracting processes to ensure that MPI contracts high quality science and derives fit for purpose research outputs from research providers.
Projects you will manage range from short-term studies over several months, to multi-year contracts. Our internal relationships are with teams from across all MPI's business units. Externally, our relationships are with all New Zealand majors research providers, as well as international scientific research suppliers.
Depending on your skills you will work as part of the team to assess scientific proposals for funding, negotiate and manage contracts, provide technical review of scientific project deliverables, and help with reporting on the Operational Research Programme.

If you are a commercial specialist, you will bring to the role:
- Experience and confidence in contract negotiations and management
- Experience in procurement processes and procedures – drafting procurement plans, RFx documents, facilitating evaluations etc
- Experience in financial management and reporting would be desirable
If you are a scientist you will bring to the role:
- Technical knowledge of New Zealand's Biosecurity and/or Food Safety system
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide thorough peer-review of technical scientific reports and other deliverables under our contracts
- Experience in applied research is desirable

The Operational Research team is part of New Zealand Food Safety. We are responsible for contracting, managing and supporting research and scientific services related to biosecurity, food safety and animal welfare. We manage all aspects commercial science research for our Directorate – from prioritisation of scientific proposals and procurement, to contract negotiation and ongoing contract monitoring.
