Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role
As stewards of our fisheries and marine environment taonga, Fisheries New Zealand undertakes important work close to the heart of New Zealanders. Our focus is the sustainable use of our wild fish stocks and management of the effects of fishing on broader marine ecosystems, now and in the future. We are experiencing an exciting time of innovation and improvement in the fisheries system and have a busy pipeline of important work including Fisheries System Reform and the implementation of on-board cameras.
As the Manager Inshore Fisheries Central, you will provide strategic and operational leadership of one of the three (North, Central, or South) inshore fisheries teams in the Fisheries Management Directorate at a pivotal time for New Zealand's oceans and fisheries. You will be instrumental to the set up and delivery of the new process for better management of our finfish work programme and will lead the team as we work in collaboration across Fisheries New Zealand on the roll out of on-board cameras and move towards more ecosystem-based fisheries management.
In order to deliver the outcomes required of this position, you will build collaborative relationships and establish credibility with Māori, sector stakeholders, and partners across Fisheries New Zealand, MPI, and other New Zealand Government agencies.
Core responsibilities include:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership on the management of New Zealand's fisheries
- Lead delivery of fisheries management services related to inshore fisheries in the central region
- Role model collaborative working and foster a high performing team environment
- Build and maintain effective and credible strategic relationships
Mōu - About You

To be successful in this role you will need:
- Knowledge of the fisheries management system
- Extensive skills in developing and implementing operational policy frameworks
- Experience in strategic leadership and achieving through others
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to build trust and credibility quickly
- Track record in relationship management across a range of groups and individuals
- Understanding of the Treaty Principles and the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act
- Previous experience working within Government is desirable but not essential.
