Salary bands for these positions are:

Analyst $60,331 - $81,624, Senior Analyst $92,073 – $124,570, Principal Adviser $128,247 - $173,511

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About our directorate

The Primary Sector Policy directorate advises Ministers on the contribution of our primary sector to New Zealand's economy, to:

  • improve primary sector productivity
  • increase sustainable resource use
  • support the transition to a circular and bioeconomy
  • assist the primary sectors to adapt to changes in climate, government regulations and community expectations.
  • delivering on primary sector Government priorities.

Our diverse work includes:

  • New regulatory initiatives and amendments to primary sector legislation including for the Fishing, Forestry and production animal-based industries
  • Contributing to cross-government initiatives such as the Emissions Reduction Plan, resource management reform, development of biodiversity standards for the marine environment
  • Supporting the Māori-Crown relationship through strengthening our partnerships with Māori and iwi and providing for participation and protection in the land and marine environment
  • Supporting quality decisions through clear advice on strategic and operational policy issues.

We work across government and in partnership with iwi and Māori land-owners, regions, sectors and communities to empower the primary sector and rural communities and improve kaitiakitanga. Our advice is informed by policy research, economic analysis, and system design with a strong focus on implementation.

We have vacancies for analysts/advisers at various levels in the forestry, aquaculture, and animal sector policy teams.

 

Mōu - About You

For a Policy Analyst, we are looking for:

  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to form a view based on the evidence
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Someone who can give things a go, even when unsure
  • Willingness to contribute positively to the team
  • An understanding of legislative processes and the machinery of government
  • The ability to bring a te ao Māori perspective.

 

For a Senior Policy Analyst, we are looking for:

  • An experienced policy professional who thinks strategically
  • The ability to analyse complex issues using evidence and critical thinking
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering high quality advice that supports quality decision-making
  • A superb communicator who will grow our team's influence
  • A comprehensive understanding of government processes and how to use them effectively
  • Intellectual and professional leadership and support of colleagues
  • The ability to work with tangata whenua to meet the Government's obligations under te Tiriti.

 

For a Principal Policy Analyst we are looking for:

  • Thought leadership to shape the scope and ambition of long-term strategies and collaborate with internal MPI and external agency partners
  • People who are interested in building the capability of other team members and contributing to a high-performing team culture.

Aquaculture policy

Come and join the aquaculture policy team supporting government decision-making in a high profile growth area which is rapidly increasing its impact on New Zealand's economy and is only set to get bigger….

We deliver a mix of strategic and regulatory policy to support to government's goal of $3 billion by 2035, guided by the Government's aquaculture strategy.

Our marine focus means we consider customary, recreational, and commercial uses of the marine environment alongside environmental outcomes. We work with iwi and agencies like the Ministry for the Environment and the Department of Conservation.

 

Animal sector policy

The Animal Sector Policy team provides analysis and advice on the performance of New Zealand's animal-based primary sectors with a special focus on our larger sectors - meat, dairy and wool. We work across the range of issues and opportunities facing these sectors to support their sustainable performance for the good of New Zealand.

We are a large team with a broad work programme including strategic and regulatory policy. We like to work collaboratively, and we actively look for opportunities for people to contribute to work across the team, the wider directorate and MPI.

 

Forestry sector policy

The Forestry policy teams are at the forefront of delivering MPI's ambition for forestry in New Zealand's emissions reduction plan, industry transformation and climate change to support a sustainable low emissions future
