Senior Laboratory Technical Officer - Procurement and Resources at Ministry for Primary Industries, Wellington - Upper Hutt

Salary range: $60,331 to $93,056 depending on skills and experience

 

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

The Ministry for Primary Industries has a rare and exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time (1.0FTE) Laboratory Technical Officer (LTO) or Senior Laboratory Technical Officer – Procurement and Resources to join the Assurance, Biosafety and Containment Team at MPI's Animal Health Laboratory (AHL). 

The LTO or Senior LTO – Procurement and Resources position is critical to the effective functioning of the entire laboratory with key responsibilities including:

  • Purchasing of laboratory consumables and equipment
  • Payment of suppliers
  • Stock management
  • Co-ordination of laboratory equipment maintenance
  • Reporting on procurement and resourcing activities.

The role involves working closely with all laboratory teams and AHL's management team. The role would suit applicants with experience of procurement and resource management either in a laboratory or a government department. You will be an excellent team player, a highly effective communicator, have strong relationship management skills and be adaptable and calm under pressure.

Mōu - About You

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline
  • Experience of complying with Health and Safety regulations
  • Experience of procurement and stock management
  • Experience of finance systems
  • Experience working within and across teams
  • Effective communication (verbal and written)
  • Strong attention to detail and quality focus
  • Ability to work within the constraints of, and follow the procedures used in a PC3+ containment laboratory
  • Capacity to plan work in line with priorities and coordinate work activities with others

Our Diagnostic and Surveillance Services (DSS) directorate are the guardians of Aotearoa New Zealand's biosecurity. As part of DSS, the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) located in Upper Hutt is New Zealand's reference centre for exotic, new and emerging terrestrial and aquatic animal diseases and contains both PC2 and PC3+ laboratory facilities. The Assurance, Biosafety and Containment Team is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for operational systems that ensure a safe operating environment and compliance to the required regulations and standards.

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
