Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
Analyst – International Fisheries Policy
Role type: Permanent
Location: Wellington
Salary range: $72,781 to $97,056 depending on skills and experience
Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
We are recruiting for an Analyst to contribute to the team's work across a range of areas. This includes:
- Coordinating New Zealand's bilateral engagement with other countries on fisheries issues.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of New Zealand's National Plans of Actions on seabirds and sharks, and our wider approach to protected species in international fisheries.
- Supporting the management of the Te Patui Pacific fisheries capacity building programme
- Being a key part of our wider engagement in regional fisheries management organisations, international organisations and oceans policy (such as the UN and OECD).
All of our work is interconnected and so flexibility and working across systems and processes is common to all roles. The role requires an understanding of the interface between fisheries policy, fisheries management and wider foreign policy in the Pacific and Antarctica. The ideal candidate will have fisheries management or policy experience. Experience in working with stakeholders, across government agencies and the workings of the Law of the Sea and related agreements is also desirable.
Mōu - About You
We are looking for a good team player with strong writing and oral communication skills who will be able to forge strong working relationships across the public sector and beyond. Experience in briefing Ministers would be an advantage. While international meetings are often held virtually, occasional travel is likely to be necessary as travel resumes. Essential skills and capabilities include:
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Good interpersonal and communications skills.
- Ability to think clearly and make decisions under pressure.
- Capacity to plan and prioritise use of time, and manage work flows.
- Sound oral and written presentation ability.
- Able to exercise judgement and act on their own initiative.
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a policy area that has direct economic and environmental value to New Zealand. It is high profile, fast paced and exciting work. If you are up for the challenge, we want to hear from you.
Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

We do this through regional rule making; shaping multilateral frameworks; managing New Zealand's bilateral fisheries engagement; ensuring policy coherence; and fisheries capability development.
