Animal Welfare Inspector

Role type: Permanent

Location: Dunedin or Timaru

Salary band & range: COPS-CS $72,795 to $102,356 depending on skills and experience

 

About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

As an Animal Welfare Inspector you will be expected to deliver a range of work to ensure animal welfare complaints are managed appropriately. You will require sound legislative knowledge, good problem-solving skills and have excellent communication skills. Each day will provide variety, as you work both in an office and in the field, meeting new people every day, while making a difference in ensuring all aspects of animal welfare compliance across Aotearoa New Zealand.

In this role you be:

  • Ensuring investigation processes and procedures are followed
  • Managing animal welfare complaints in the primary production sector
  • Preparing prosecution files where required
  • Monitoring service providers and licensed establishments for compliance with animal welfare
  • Working with other Inspectors and Investigators to prepare and present robust prosecution cases where non-compliance is identified
  • Promoting good animal welfare practices
  • Building and sustaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Having practical working knowledge of the laws under which investigations and compliance activities operate.
  • Having experience in leading or supporting investigations in an enforcement environment is desirable.

 

About You - Mōu

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Proven experience in working with livestock, animal husbandry or veterinary services.
  • Knowledge of farming organisations and external animal welfare agencies.
  • Practical working knowledge or be able to able to demonstrate the potential to develop knowledge of the laws under which investigations and compliance activities operate including: NAIT Act, Animal Welfare Act, Evidence Act, Criminal Disclosure Act, Criminal Procedures Act, Search and Surveillance Act, Animal Products Act and Biosecurity Act.

You must have a current full New Zealand driver licence (not temporary, learner, or provisional) or equivalent full foreign drivers licence, and any endorsements required for the type of driving you'll be doing.

 

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū

The Animal Welfare and NAIT Compliance group sit within Agricultural Investment Services. The South Central Team covers a large region with team members based in Dunedin, Oamaru and Timaru.

Our team supports MPI to pursue high standards of biosecurity and animal welfare in order to grow the value of New Zealand's food and fibre sector.

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
