About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
You'll work at the heart of public sector financial strategy, helping translate data, information and analysis into insights that drive smart decisions. The work is wide-ranging and meaningful, from baseline and appropriation management, helping manage cost pressures, delivering savings, to reporting on MPI's environmental and financial commitments. MPI is a large, complex, commercial agency that plays a significant role in enabling New Zealand's primary sector to thrive. Gaining a deep understanding of MPI's business, you'll play a part in shaping long-term financial strategy, you'll help identify savings opportunities, understand significant cost pressures, and participate in “deep dive” analytical reviews of MPI's operations. You'll also be involved in reprioritising funding, workforce costing, environmental reporting, and reporting to Treasury's Green Bond programme team as well as developing MPI's annual External Budget and Performance Plan.
You will:
- Use your public sector financial management experience to help manage expenditure, funding, cost pressures, and deliver savings
- Work with the Strategic Finance team and across the business to assemble and submit MPI's External Budget and Performance Plan to Ministers and the Treasury
- Use data, analysis, and insights to tell compelling stories to help shape decisions
- Deliver analysis and reporting across grants and funds, and the Green Bond programme
- Lead MPI's reporting to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment
- Build clear stories from complex financial and non-financial data
- Help the Strategic Finance team manage baseline funding and appropriations
- Facilitate expense transfers, retention of underspends, and output frameworks
- Provide quality service and stakeholder advice to help business units operate in a financially sustainable way
- Influence outcomes with a helpful, “how can I help” approach to your work
- Contribute to the analysis of MPI's financial performance by ensuring that expenditure matches funding
- Support the People & Capability team with workforce costing and analytics

You'll be working, or have worked, in a medium to large sized government department or similar environment where public sector financial management and strategic financial management are central. You enjoy tackling complex financial questions and shaping long term financial planning that supports strong organisational performance.
You bring a data driven mindset and confidence building insight from information, analysis, and evidence. You thrive in a fast-paced work environment, and you enjoy being engaged with the wider business and supporting financial strategy conversations with senior leaders. You value learning, you are curious and seek opportunities to close your own knowledge gaps.
You're comfortable working with financial data, contributing to MPI's financial strategy, External Budget, and Performance Plan, and supporting financial strategy conversations with senior leaders. You value learning, you are curious and seek opportunities to close your own knowledge gaps.
