About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga
We are seeking a Policy Analyst to join the Science, Innovation, and Workforce policy team, based within the Strategy, Insights and Evidence Directorate of the Policy and Trade Branch. As a Policy Analyst, you will be responsible for supporting the overall capability of the team. The role contributes to MPI's strategic goals by ensuring the sector is future-ready, resilient, and globally competitive.
You will work on big‑picture issues that influence how science, technology, education, and immigration settings support a thriving food and fibre sector. You will gather evidence, analyse policy issues, develop policy options and prepare policy advice for defined policy issues.
As a Policy Analyst, you will get to work across government on a range of topics and facilitate engagement internally and with other agencies, building your strong foundation in policy and system thinking.
About You - Mōu
The ideal candidate will be a good team player, a fast learner, and have excellent writing skills. You will have a sound understanding of government processes, including Ministerial and Parliamentary processes. Ideally, you will have some experience supporting Ministers by providing timely and relevant responses to Ministerial and Parliamentary questions, Official Information Act requests and preparing Ministerial correspondence.
About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū
You will work with a Wellington based team, reporting to the Manager, Science, Innovation, and Workforce policy, and work alongside other policy analysts within the team and the wider Directorate.
You will join a team that brings strong industry understanding and a real passion for strategic, system‑level thinking. We look across the whole primary sector to understand what's changing, what's needed, and how government policy can support innovation, science capability, and workforce development.
We also play a connecting role - helping other government agencies understand how their policies affect the primary sector and communicating wider government direction back to industry.
The team also works closely with the wider Policy and Trade Branch, other Branches of MPI, a range of government agencies, and industry so there is ample opportunity work with and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
