About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

Join MPI's growing Procurement team and step into an exciting new role where your developing procurement skills will contribute to outcomes that matter for Aotearoa New Zealand. You'll be part of a high‑performing, supportive team within a large, purpose‑driven organisation, working across a diverse range of business areas such as Forestry, Fisheries, Biosecurity and New Zealand Food Safety. This diversity means no two days are the same, with plenty of opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and priorities.

 

This newly created role within the team presents an excellent opportunity to build capability through hands on experience. Your experience in procurement means you'll be able to hit the ground running while continuing to develop your technical expertise and confidence. Supported by a great manager and a strong learning and development culture, you'll gain exposure to end‑to‑end procurement and contract management in a complex government environment, while aligning your why with MPI's purpose of delivering real and lasting change.

 

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the development of fit‑for‑purpose procurement strategies
  • Assisting with end‑to‑end procurement processes, from planning through to negotiation and contract execution
  • Providing advice and practical support to contract managers
  • Managing procurement activities that build experience, demonstrate capability, and support diverse business portfolios

 

About You - Mōu

You are customer‑focused, analytically minded, and confident engaging with a wide range of stakeholders. You enjoy explaining value, risk, and trade‑offs in a clear, practical way, and you bring sound judgement and commercial awareness to your work. With developing procurement experience and strong business acumen, you know how to balance outcomes while keeping stakeholders informed and engaged.

 

You are motivated to learn, build your capability, and create meaningful change through your work. You are comfortable stepping into a busy, diverse environment, applying your skills while continuing to grow. Your clear communication style, curiosity, and commitment to delivering value align well with MPI's purpose and way of working.

 

You will bring:

  • Experience in procurement and contract management
  • Experience supporting contract negotiations
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to analyse issues, evaluate options, and report clearly
  • Understanding of return on investment, cost, and value impacts
  • Confidence preparing documentation and discussing procurement concepts

The Procurement team is made up of 24 professionals who deliver procurement support across MPI, providing quality advice aligned to strategic outcomes.
