Emergency Medicine Registrars (2025 Training year)
Start date: fROM 13 January 2025
- ACEM Tier 2 site with accreditation for 24 months of training
- Satisfy your ACEM Critical Care component with our dedicated six months rotation in Anaesthesia
- Supplement your Emergency Medicine training with our excellent non-ED accredited runs in General Medicine, Cardiology and Paediatric Medicine
- Be a part of our established Primary and Fellowship examination programmes
- Salary as per the relevant Collective Agreement. (Category C – Shift rosters)
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – MidCentral District's Emergency Department is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 55,000 presentations per annum. It is a mixed ED and is Tier 2 accredited for 24 months of training under the revised Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) training programme. Our ED sees a large volume of trauma and high acuity paediatric and adult medical patient presentations. You can expect regular exposure to numerous critical procedures and a vast range of complex pathology. We have access to excellent accredited non-ED rotations such as Anaesthesia, Paediatric Medicine, General Medicine and Cardiology. We are a close-knit team of FACEMs who are committed to the career development of our registrars and to providing a supportive training environment.

The city is diverse, lively, affordable and a great place to live. It is renowned for its mountain bike park, river walks, large number of restaurants and cafes, plus easy access to surf beaches and the Ruahine and Tararua mountains. Commutes are short and there are excellent schools in the city. There is plenty to do locally and with its central location it is also easy to get away and enjoy all the major attractions of the Lower North Island, including the ski fields of Ruapehu, the wineries of the Hawkes Bay and Martinborough, or the capital city of Wellington.

Our Registrars enjoy a weekly, structured, protected teaching programme which is consultant led and delivered using an array of teaching strategies and features dedicated cultural competence, cultural safety and paediatric emergency medicine teaching. For trainees we have Primary and Fellowship examination programmes which are highly supported and are delivered weekly, in addition to the protected teaching programme.
There is an embedded mentoring programme and plentiful opportunities for involvement in clinical research and departmental non-clinical portfolios.

Ideal applicants will have completed at least 6 months in Emergency Medicine and be post-graduate year 3 or above. You must be eligible to register for General Scope with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
