Public Health Nurse - Whanganui - Te Ikaroa - NPHS at Te Whatu Ora, Manawatu / Whanganui

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

  • 0.8 FTE Permanent Part-time
  • Location: Whanganui

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.  We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations, from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.  Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

We have a permanent part-time (0.8 FTE) opportunity for a Public Health Nurse, with a strong focus on working alongside kura kaupapa Māori, while also providing support to other schools, education settings and public health clinic settings across the Whanganui rohe, in line with public health service needs.

Public Health Nursing is a dynamic specialty that blends nursing expertise, social sciences and public health knowledge to protect and promote wellbeing at a population level. In this role, you will work closely with kura kaupapa Māori, recognising kura as key partners in hauora. You will take a collaborative, relationship-based approach that supports and empowers kura, tamariki, rangatahi and whānau to lead lives of wellness, grounded in mātauranga Māori, tikanga and whānau-centred practice.

As part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS), you will collaborate across teams and communities to address the wider determinants of health and deliver culturally responsive, equitable public health nursing services.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our Public Health Nursing team sits within the National Public Health Service (NPHS) at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora. We are a connected and values-driven team delivering locally grounded and nationally aligned public health services.

This role is based in Whanganui, a community with strong cultural identity and deep connections to whenua and awa. You will work closely with kura kaupapa Māori and wider education and community partners, contributing to improved equity and wellbeing outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.

About you

We are seeking a Registered Nurse who is passionate about public health, equity and working in partnership with Māori communities. You will bring:

  • A strong commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori, tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
  • Demonstrated competency in Mātauranga Māori and the application of Māori health models to nursing practice
  • Experience building and sustaining strong, respectful and reciprocal relationships with kura kaupapa Māori, recognising kura as partners in hauora and supporting shared decision-making that enhances wellbeing outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • A full driver's licence

Desirable

  • Experience working in community settings, and or across intersectoral services and teams
  • Whole of Life Vaccinator status (or willingness to work towards this)
  • Some proficiency in speaking and understanding Te Reo Māori, or a clear commitment to developing this capability
  • Experience working in education, kura, or community settings
  • A competent portfolio in an approved PDRP (or equivalent), with a commitment to ongoing professional development

This is an opportunity to be part of a team that is shaping healthier futures through partnership, cultural responsiveness and public health leadership. If you are motivated to contribute to improved hauora outcomes in Whanganui, we would love to hear from you.
