MidCentral District located in Palmerston North City could be the perfect place for you!

The Emergency Department offers 6 or 12 month SHO runs in Emergency Medicine and actively promotes strong candidates into Registrar positions.

 

Palmerston North Hospital is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 48,000 presentations per annum. Palmerston North is located at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3, and is the largest city in the Manawatu region. The department sees both blunt and penetrating trauma as well as high acuity paediatric and adult medical patients. It is an increasingly busy department and has maintained a 30+% admission rate. There is access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington. 

There is a high rate of exposure to critical procedures compared to other large departments.

 

Teaching is a strength of the department - there is weekly protected registrar-led teaching sessions as well as regular critical incident, clinical radiology, and paediatric teaching. There are also regular clinical simulations that are registrar-led.

 

The department is dedicated to patient-centred care, and are looking for doctors with a team focus, excellent communication skills, and a clear commitment to emergency medicine.

 

The city of Palmerston North is a diverse and vibrant city, that is very livable and affordable. There is no sitting in traffic as a 5 – 15 minutes commute is the norm. There is lots to do locally or with its central location it is easy to get away for the weekend to all the major attractions of Lower North Island - 2 hours' drive away from the vibrant capital of Wellington, the wineries of Hawkes Bay and the ski fields of Ruapehu
