Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections) Health Services lead the delivery of patient-focused primary health care services to tangata within corrections facilities across Aotearoa.  Hōkai Rangi, our over-arching strategic direction, places the focus on health at the heart of our business.  Building our frameworks from a Matauranga Māori basis is our focus to drive and support equity for Māori, which in turn will contribute to achieving our outcomes of reducing reoffending. This places the work of the Health Team at Ara Poutama Aotearoa at the heart of our business.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

The general practitioner (medical officer) will be an integral team member of the Department's primary care services, working regionally across prison sites providing frontline medical services to patients as part of the health centre team working alongside our frontline nursing, allied health, mental health and māori practitioners.  Supporting the Department's focus to provide excellent prison-based health care, achieve equity for Māori and Māori heath gain alongside quality improvement and assurance of the primary care service.

This role reports to the Chief Medical Officer who provides direct professional and management support. The Regional Operations Director Health leads the regional health service delivery and is responsible for regional planning and operations and will therefore also provide the operational management and support to the role. The Health Centre Manager will support day to day on site activities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Ara Poutama Aotearoa in a pivotal role.  If successful you will be joining the high performing Health Services teams who are committed to developing and embedding a Kaupapa Māori based model of care into the heart of Health Services. 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

We invite applications from registered and professionally credible General Practitioners who can evidence the following skills and expertise:

  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and an understanding of current inequities faced by Māori and a commitment to Māori health gain is essential
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven experience of responsiveness to innovation, quality improvement, safety and positive experiences within health care for patients
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of Māori health inequity and the reasons behind this
  • An understanding of the multi-disciplinary team needed to deliver effective primary care

An FRNZCGP qualification is preferred however not essential.

These are new positions and as such can be based anywhere in the country, with negotiable part or full time hours.
