About the role - Mō tēnei tūranga
The Chief Legal Advisor reports to the Deputy Chief Executive – Office of the Chief Executive and is responsible for leading and managing the Legal Directorate which consists of two teams: Legal, and Information Requests. You will develop and utilise an advanced understanding of our organisational context, including an understanding of our operational environment, and the organisation's relationships with our Unions and Associations. You will need the ability to identify and respond to key issues and risks and lead the provision of legal advice to all parts of the organisation. The Chief Legal Advisor is also Fire and Emergency's Privacy Officer.
What you'll bring to the role - Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga
We need someone who can provide robust and actionable advice, make well-considered decisions and provide support across a wide variety of legal issues. You'll be prepared to constructively challenge the status quo – displaying courage to do the right thing, initiative, sound judgement and a healthy dose of innovative thinking.
Ultimately you will be a true multi-talented generalist and active problem-solver.
To be successful in this role, we'd expect you will:
- Be a qualified barrister and solicitor with a current practising certificate
- Have extensive experience in providing legal advice at a senior level within a large and complex public sector organisation, and in managing teams that provide legal advice in this context
- Have a calm and measured approach under pressure, and maintain professionalism at all times
- Have exceptional management and leadership skills
- Bring a collaborative and collegial working style
- Have a high level of personal resilience and emotional intelligence
