As a key member of the Risk Reduction Leadership Team within Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the Regulatory Compliance Manager plays a pivotal role in strengthening fire safety outcomes across the country. This position leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of regulatory compliance frameworks and functions, ensuring Fire and Emergency effectively upholds its legislative responsibilities.
Through managing a dedicated team and developing targeted work programmes, the role directly contributes to reducing fire risks in the built environment and improving compliance with fire safety regulations. By fostering strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, the Regulatory Compliance Manager drives initiatives that not only enhance enforcement but also support education and engagement—critical components in achieving long-term fire safety improvements.

This is a significant leadership position with national impact, ensuring that Fire and Emergency's compliance and enforcement functions remain fit for purpose, responsive to emerging risks, and aligned with best practice. The role is integral to protecting people, property, and the environment by promoting a culture of fire safety and regulatory accountability across New Zealand.
Key responsibilities are to -
- Lead the development and implementation of compliance frameworks, systems and tools and work programmes aligned with Fire and Emergency's strategic priorities.
- Manage and build the capability of the Regulatory Compliance team, fostering a high-performance culture.
- Collaborate with cross-agency partners, central government, and sector stakeholders to achieve compliance and regulatory reform objectives.
- Provide expert advice on compliance and enforcement strategies to drive behaviour change and enhance public safety.
- Ensure resources are effectively managed, and systems and processes are optimised to support regulatory functions.
To be successful in this role, we'd expect you will:
- Proven experience leading regulatory compliance programmes in a complex organisation.
- Expertise in developing and implementing compliance frameworks, systems, and processes.
- A strong understanding of New Zealand's legislative and regulatory frameworks and the machinery of government.
- Excellent leadership skills, with experience managing people and resources to deliver impactful outcomes.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to work effectively across agencies and sectors.
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Public Policy, Law, Commerce, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

The salary range for this role is $177,313-$197,014 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
