About the Business and National Science Challenge

About the role

The Commercialisation Development Manager is a senior business engagement role connecting the National Science Challenge - Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI) research community and projects to commercialisation in the innovation ecosystem.

The key responsibilities of this role include the following:

  • Facilitating SfTI research projects through the stages of commercialisation, harnessing the commercialisation capabilities of other organizations as needed
  • Enhancing SfTI researchers understanding of the innovation ecosystem and processes, to ensure they engage from an early stage with potential end users, distributors and manufacturers of their technologies, to identify opportunities for commercialisation as projects proceed, and to ensure researchers engage with commercialisation experts, mentors and potential investors, and with commercialisation partners and providers including Return on Science, Kiwinet, Callaghan Innovation supported Technology Incubators, angel investors, university and CRI commercialisation offices, etc
  • Identifying global commercialisation opportunities and trends for SfTI research

Please note that this is a fixed-term role until June 2024.

To be successful you will have the following attributes and skills:

  • Preferably minimum of five years experience within business development and/or the commercialisation environment linking research to commercialisation
  • Highly developed business development skills, including strategy development, ability to measure performance, and a track record of delivering on implementation
  • Well established networks across the commercialisation ecosystem
  • Proven experience working at a senior level with an ability to engage with public and private sector senior managers, board members, senior academics, investors and senior government officials
  • Awareness of the opportunities that exist within the Māori economy
  • Tolerance and patience to find the best opportunities in a tough commercial environment
  • Hunger for success in making things happen and achieving results
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional relationship management skills
  • Ability to manage workload pressures while remaining calm and considered
