Job Description

Are you passionate about developing and supporting current and emerging leaders? Fire and Emergency New Zealand is piloting a new role (through to January 2021) to work alongside our volunteer leaders; providing tailored development, support and advice to management.

These roles are for a fixed term period of two and a half years, full-time 40 hours per week, with some need for flexibility in working outside of standard business hours. They will be located within our Regional setup with the main centres being Auckland (Region 1), Tauranga (Region 2), Wellington (Region 3), Christchurch (Region 4) and Dunedin (Region 5). We are happy to consider locations outside of these main centres for the right people.

The key areas of work you'll be involved in include:

  • Supporting and developing a selected portfolio of our volunteer brigade and fire force leadership teams to ensure positive team dynamics, as well as sound management systems and processes are in place to enable strong performance
  • Working as part of a wider team (local leaders, Regional HR team, Regional Trainers, Volunteer Support Officers, and other in-field support roles) to partner with our volunteer leadership teams early on to identify development gaps and opportunities, address challenging volunteer brigade or fire force dynamics, and facilitate succession plans to assist brigade and fire force sustainment
  • Coaching and co-delivery with our volunteer leaders to help develop and build robust and resilient teams. You'll be able to draw on your Regional HR team and/or external facilitation as needed
  • Providing or facilitating one on one coaching to our volunteer leaders during critical role transitions, and/or during times of significant leadership challenge
  • Connecting and networking volunteer leaders locally to increase peer support, connectivity, learning and sharing of ‘what works'

We are looking for a team player who:

  • has solid people leadership knowledge and skills, with experience in coaching and developing other leaders
  • understands effective management systems and processes, and can advise on and/or develop strategies to improve volunteer capability
  • possesses interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with volunteer leaders, local leaders and support personnel
  • has good facilitation and presentation skills, with demonstrated ability to convey information and ideas clearly and accurately, in a way that meets the needs of the audience
  • has an inclusive working style, understands the value in consultation, listening, and bringing others along
  • is able to organise and prioritise workloads effectively, to ensure high quality results within deadlines
  • can be adaptable to meet changing local needs as the pilot activity progresses, and work effectively in both a team environment and independently.

Can work flexible hours, outside of ‘normal business' hours, with travel across regional territory.
