Job Description

Be part of a supportive team who are fully committed to achieving positive outcomes for young people, whanau and the community.

We are a new Ministry with a commitment to putting vulnerable children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say.  Our Youth Justice Social Workers are the key people who bring together young people, their whanau, victims, police, youth advocates and essential support services when a young person has committed a serious offence.

We are looking for a qualified social worker who can build rapport with children and young people, complete thorough assessments and analyse evidence to get things right for children and their whanau.   You must be able to demonstrate that you are able to positively influence Rangatahi to accept responsibility, change their behaviours and ensure their voices are heard in the process. You will work to empower whanau to engage in family group conferences and court proceedings. You will work with Rangatahi to create plans and partner with other agencies and stakeholders to get wrap around support in place. Your tenacity to overcome everyday barriers and ability to drive positive outcomes will put you in good stead for this challenging yet hugely rewarding role.

In return we can offer you:

  • a salary between $45,948 - $77,466  (commensurate with skills and experience)
  • a challenging, fascinating and rewarding career
  • on-going training and regular supervision.

Preference is given to those who have:

  • the ability to connect with youth and quickly build rapport
  • strong communication skills (you will need to write succinct, factual and audience appropriate court reports)
  • resilient, motivated and driven character
  • experience working with young people
  • flexibility to work after hours duty roster
  • strong computer literacy (typing and web navigation)
  • full clean valid NZ driver's licence without conditions.

You must have a Social Work Qualification that is recognised by the New Zealand Social Work Registration Board (SWRB) or have full SWRB registration and current annual practising certificate (APC).
