About the Electoral Commission | Te Kaitiaki Take Kōwhiri

The Electoral Commission wants every New Zealander to trust, value and take part in parliamentary elections.

In all of our activities we aim to make it easy for the public to enrol and vote, promote understanding of New Zealand's democratic processes, and encourage participation.

Be part of something important

This year's General Election will be held on Saturday 23 September 2017 and will be New Zealand's biggest logistical event of the year.  It involves nearly 18,000 staff, 2,300 voting places and 3 million voters in every community across the country.

If you have a strong focus on customer service then you should consider getting involved.

The search is now underway for people to work on Election Day as well as approximately 3,000 to work on a Casual basis at electorate headquarters and at Advance Voting Places before, on and after Election Day.

Election Day roles:

You and a team of electoral staff will issue votes in a voting place within the community on election day.  The roles are critical to the smooth running of the election and the experience will be rewarding.  All staff are paid and trained for each role.

Advance Voting Staff:

You will issue votes in an advance voting place within the community ensuring all electors receive a good service during the two weeks before election day.  You will be paid an hourly rate and receive all the training and support you need to provide good customer service.

Headquarter Staff:

There are a range of roles requiring different skills for different lengths of time.  You could be assisting with electorate supplies, entering election results, or leading a team of people.

The nature of the work means that you'll need to be flexible and dependable.  There may be some travel around your electorate required.

We welcome applications from people who can:

  • follow detailed instructions
  • work well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • work with a diverse group of people
  • have strong focus on customer service
  • pay attention to detail
  • be politically neutral

We encourage you to apply online at http://www.elections.org.nz/events/2017-general-election/working-2017-general-election.  Your application will be submitted overnight to your Returning Officer for considering.

For more information about these roles visit our website at www.elections.govt.nz or phone 0800 36 76 56.

Applications will remain open until all positions are filled.
