Analyst - Science Stewardship

The Ministry for the Environment's (MfE) purpose, as an organisation, is to make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna. ‘Liveable' in an MfE context puts New Zealanders at the heart of our work, recognising a thriving environment underpins economic prosperity.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled Analyst to join the Marine, Environmental Risk and Science Directorate to work in our busy Science Stewardship team. This is an opportunity to work in a Ministry that plays a key role in shaping the way New Zealand manages its natural resources.

The Science Stewardship team is integral to connecting science and research with the Ministry's environmental reporting and policy work. This ensures that sound science and evidence underpin decision making and advice, and that credible information is available for the public to understand New Zealand's environment. We work closely with teams across the Ministry, research providers, other government departments and regional councils to achieve this. We also play an important  role in leading the Ministry's strategic engagement with the science sector.

As an Analyst in the Science Stewardship team you'll work and across the team. This will involve (but not be limited to):

  • implementation of the Conservation and Environment Science Roadmap (this sets out New Zealand's science priorities and capability requirements over the next 20 years)
  • implementation of our Science Strategy (this provides the vision for the science capability, systems and infrastructure needed to ensure that robust science evidence is routinely and consistently used to inform decision making, advice and reporting by the Ministry)
  • coordinating our engagement with science funding rounds (e.g. National Science Challenges, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment science funding rounds)
  • systems and process improvements
  • strategic engagement with the science sector.

The role would suit someone who is willing and able to get stuck into all aspects of the team's work programme no matter how big or small. Previous experience working in central government would be helpful although not essential. You will:

  • have a background in natural sciences
  • understand the science system in New Zealand and how science is used to make decision
  • have a strong relationship building ability
  • communicate information clearly and succinctly to a range of audiences
  • readily adapt to changing priorities
  • be innovative and solutions focussed
  • be highly organised and able develop, implement robust systems and processes

Join us and you'll find a strong team culture. You will also have the opportunity to make a positive difference to New Zealand's environment.
