Job Description

The Environmental Protection Authority is looking for a junior solicitor.

What we offer

Our mission is to protect the environment, the New Zealand way of life and the economy. We incorporate these principles into all aspects of our work. We have a strong culture of supporting staff to realise their full potential through opportunities for professional development and genuine work life balance.

As a member of our dynamic and energetic legal team, you will have access to varied and interesting work. On a day to day basis we collaborate with our scientists, our Maori policy advisers, senior management, central government departments, and the public. We tackle issues such as emissions trading, pesticide use, GMO's, nationally significant infrastructure projects under the RMA, and marine consents for oil and gas and seabed mining activities out in the EEZ. We also provide advice on broader public law issues, including matters relating to the Crown Entities Act, compliance and litigation. We are all about making a difference.

You will be part of a high-performing team of eight solicitors. Your team mates come from diverse backgrounds and the collective savvy of the team presents a great opportunity to learn the art of in-house lawyering. You will be mentored and guided by senior members of the team, whilst also having a significant amount of autonomy to work on interesting projects across the entire organisation.

What we are looking for

We have a vacancy for a Junior Solicitor. This entry level position would suit a recent Graduate or an applicant starting their legal career (less than 2 years PQE). This is a full time position however flexible working arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.

The Junior Solicitor will work under the guidance of senior lawyers within the team, providing legal support in the form of research and draft advice on a range of interesting and topical issues in environmental law.

Knowledge and experience required

We are looking for someone that is:

  • a graduate or a solicitor with less than 2 years PQE
  • eligible to hold a current Practicing Certificate;
    and who has
  • an excellent academic record;
  • a strong interest in public law and an understanding of environmental law issues;
  • great communication skills and, in particular, the ability to analyse complex and sometimes specialised information and provide succinct and clear written advice; and
  • a can-do attitude and sense of humour.

If you are looking for interesting legal work that makes a real difference to our way of life in New Zealand, and you would like to be part of a terrific team, we would love to hear from you.
