Job Description

What we offer

Our mission is to protect the environment, the New Zealand way of life and the economy. We incorporate these principles into all aspects of our work. We have a strong culture of supporting staff to realise their full potential through opportunities for professional development and genuine work life balance.

As a member of our dynamic and energetic legal team, you will have access to varied and interesting work. On a day to day basis we collaborate with our scientists, our Maori policy advisers, senior management, central government departments, and the public. We tackle issues such as emissions trading, pesticide use, GMO's, nationally significant infrastructure projects under the RMA, and marine consents for oil and gas and seabed mining activities out in the EEZ.  We also provide advice on broader public law issues, including matters relating to the Crown Entities Act, compliance and litigation. We are all about making a difference.

You will be part of a high-performing team of eight solicitors.  Your team mates come from diverse backgrounds and the collective knowledge of the team presents a great opportunity to build on your in-house legal experience.  We have a collegial culture and a strong emphasis on mentoring and collaboration within the team, working across the entire organisation, providing advice and support on governance, policy, and operational issues.

What we are looking for

This is a 6 month fixed term opportunity to cover a parental leave position based in our central Wellington CBD office.  The Solicitor will provide timely, accurate and solution focussed legal advice on legal issues associated with the EPA's statutory functions (including those under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, the Resource Management Act, the Climate Change Response Act and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act) as well as advising on broader corporate service matters.

Knowledge and experience required

We are looking for someone who:

  • is a qualified Barrister and Solicitor with a current Practicing Certificate;
  • has a proven background in producing quality legal services, preferably with experience in environmental or public law, or both;
  • has a sound understanding of public policy processes and the roles of government agencies;
  • is able to provide sound advice in an operational context;
  • works collaboratively to develop effective relationships at work;
  • has a background or understanding of the enforcement of regulatory frameworks (useful but not essential)

We are open to the possibility of a secondment. Part-time or other flexible working arrangements would be considered for the right candidate.

If you are looking for interesting work that makes a real difference to our way of life in New Zealand, and you would like to be part of a terrific team, we would love to hear from you.
