Job Description

We are a new Ministry with a commitment to putting vulnerable children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say.  If you are passionate about making a difference in the lives of at-risk young people, and want to join our supportive team who are fully committed to achieving positive outcomes for young people, whanau and the community.


We operate a secure 24/7 facility, working with young people aged 13-17 who are on remand, or sentenced via Youth Court. Our ultimate goal is to help every young person we work with to realise their potential. We help young people transition into education, training, or employment, and to a safe and stable living arrangement when they leave our care. Youth Workers make a significant difference in the lives of at-risk young people . They provide day-to-day role-modeling, mentoring, support, and coordinated activities for the challenging young people under our care. You will be on the floor with our young people, so you must have had previous experience working with youth as you will be delivering programmes and services as part of a daily programme or as part of an individual care plan.


As a casual youth worker it is important that you are able to cover day and night shifts (including weekends) as required.  You will be employed on an 'as and when required' basis, and the position will best suit those who have a need to have flexible working hours. To give you an idea of the shifts you may be required to cover, our team of Youth Workers work eight-hour rostered  AM (6.00 am to 2.30 pm) and PM (2.00 pm to 10.30 pm)  and Night (10pm to 6.30am) shifts Monday to Sunday roster.

You will have experience in social services, including working with at-risk children or youth; and/or a relevant qualification in youth work, sport and recreation, education, health, or psychology is preferred but not essential. Applicants with relevant and transferrable life skills are also encouraged to apply. A full orientation and training programme is included.     


You must:

• be available to work rostered shifts/night shifts
• meet the VCA safety checking and Ministry vetting requirements (police check etc.)
• be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident as this Level 4 or 5 ANZSCO classification role.
• be a strong team player and positive role model
• demonstrate initiative and sound judgement, with an ability to ‘think on your feet'
• have experience developing rapport with young people
• have excellent written and verbal communication skills and some computer literacy
• have a full clean New Zealand drivers' licence
