Our vision is to make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna. It's a purpose that puts every New Zealander at the heart of our work, and recognises the crucial role that the environment plays in all aspects of our lives. It is at the centre of who we are as Kiwis and underpins our economic prosperity, our health and our physical and cultural well-being.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Legal and Procurement Directorate at the Ministry for the Environment.  We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a positive and dynamic team environment.

The Environmental Legal Assistance Fund

The Legal and Procurement Team is responsible for administering the Environmental Legal Assistance (ELA) Fund. The ELA Fund provides not-for-profit groups with financial assistance to advocate for an environmental issue of public interest at resource management cases at the Environment Court, and at boards of inquiry constituted under the ‘call-in' provisions of the Resource Management Act 1991.

Applications for ELA funding are assessed by an independent advisory panel made up of seven experts from diverse resource management backgrounds, with final decisions for funding made by the Director Legal and Procurement under delegated authority from the Minister for the Environment.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting ELA Fund application processes and each funding round
  • Providing general and financial administrative support to the Fund
  • Providing secretariat support to the ELA advisory panel and liaising with panel members
    • Drafting deeds of funding and correspondence to applicants
    • Preparing ELA related Ministerial briefings, Official Information Act responses and answers to parliamentary questions.

Critical to success in the role:

  • Interpersonal savvy and skilled in developing and managing      stakeholder relationships
  • Well-developed analytical skills and a nose for financials
  • Ability to interpret technical data for decision-makers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Attention to detail is a strength.
  • Skilled at reviewing and enhancing processes / tools and procedures      with a view to continual improvement.

In addition, but not essential, we are keen to consider applicants who have:

  • a legal qualification
  • an understanding of administering contestable funding
  • knowledge or interest in environmental law
  • experience of working in central or local government
