Job Description

New Zealand's public health system needs to be accessible to all New Zealanders, provide high quality care and address inequities. The role of the Ministry of Health is to actively and effectively lead the health and disability system, collaborating with health sector leaders, iwi, communities, employers and other government agencies to support a high performing system.

 

We are looking for a highly experienced senior leader to be the Director-General of Health providing active stewardship and leadership across the health and disability system and working collectively with strategic partners and stakeholders.  The Director-General will advise the Government on the best steps to take to maintain an effective regulatory environment and the national policy settings needed to support the delivery of the highest quality health and disability services for New Zealanders.

 

The role of the Director-General of Health requires a leader with natural skills and experience in delivering frank, coherent and high-quality policy advice. The leader must be able to think, plan and act strategically, and be able to advise Ministers on the future direction and shape of the health and disability system, including the arrangement of functions between the Ministry and the statutory health Crown entities.

 

In addition to system leadership, the Director-General of Health leads and manages a large and complex Ministry accountable for delivering an end to end process from policy to operational delivery. As a leader they must be ambitious for the Ministry and provide leadership to improve its operational and strategic capability, culture, agility, responsiveness and overall delivery of its core business.

 

Excellent leadership by public service chief executives is essential to high performing departments and a high performing public service. Chief executives are required to work collaboratively in a spirit of service and strive towards the overall goal of a system of world class, professional State Services, serving the Government of the day and meeting the needs of all New Zealanders.
