Senior scientists – Environmental reporting

Are you excited by the prospect to be a lead scientist in the environmental reporting programme?

We are seeking to recruit two experienced scientists to provide expertise to the environmental reporting programme which produces national state of the environment reports under the Environmental Reporting Act. We are looking for specialisation in the areas of land and biodiversity.

Your role

  • Both roles will contribute to the scoping, planning and production of the next synthesis report, Environment Aotearoa 2019. Your input will be particularly sought after for:
    • the development of two cross-domain stories: on biodiversity and on the impacts of land use change
    • an overview of domains relevant to your expertise
    • You will be the lead science expert for the planning and production of domain reports relevant to your expertise i.e. Land 2021; with the biodiversity specialist balancing contributions to all domain reports
    • Your planning will include identifying content to include and how to frame that information to meet the needs of the environmental reporting audience
    • You will have oversight and support several science analysts working on relevant reports
    • You will lead engagement with key stakeholders and technical groups for the development and production of your specific domain report or domain report contribution, Environment Aotearoa 2019
    • You will provide critical support to the Secretary for the Environment and brief Ministers on technical considerations in your area of expertise
    • You will, in conjunction with professional writing expertise, help develop the outline and early drafts of relevant reports or chapters, including identifying key messages

 

Your experience

We expect you will have:

  • Recognised academic qualifications and at least six years' experience in one or more of the science specialties sought
  • The ability to identify key messages from communicate technical information in an accessible manner to a range of stakeholders
  • A general understanding of the interactions between your area of specialty and other domains
  • A good understanding of the stakeholders involved in your science specialty in New Zealand
  • A good understanding of central government as well as key national environmental policy

 

The following would be highly regarded in addition to the above:

  • Have a general understanding of matauranga Māori as it applies to your specialty, and experience communicating/working with a Te Ao Māori lens
  • Have worked with, or seeks to develop experience in, data technologies to support analysis and reproducible results e.g. R
