The Ministry has one of the largest IT groups in the country, managing strategy, design, development, maintenance, operation and support of IT systems. As a specialist in your field, you will be part of a team who deliver excellent and high level support and service to the Ministry's business.

As UNIX System Engineer you will responsible for the running of the Ministry's centralised enterprise Unix Systems, including the integration and administration of HP SANs. We have a rich and varied set of technologies with virtual server configurations. Our environment uses appropriate virtualisation technologies supporting Redhat, HP-UX, and Solaris operating systems. You will work with scrum masters providing Epics Features and enablers from a shared services team. You will work closely with wider operation groups and scrum masters  including in-house Middleware and Database Administrators. 

You will need to have substantial experience in Unix Systems Administration, preferably in large scale environments using centralised configuration management software and experience with infrastructure including SAN arrays and fabrics, enclosures, blades, and a range of backup devices. Systems Management toolsets knowledge is also preferable, as is experience with shell scripts and other languages such as Python, Perl and Ruby. You will need to be able to demonstrate sound documentation skills.


  • Experience with VMware.
  • Competence with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. (Scale = hundreds of VM).
  • Competence with Logical Volume Managers in multiple platforms (Linux, HPUX, Solaris, and MS Windows environments)
  • Understanding Networking, SAN
  • Ability to backup and recover company data.
  • Monitoring and integration knowledge into the likes of Nagios, HPE SIM, HP IRS and HPE One View.


  • Experience using HPE enclosures and blades
  • Experience using configuration management tools, i.e. Satellite, Puppet or alternatives.
  • Actifio CDS and Sky application knowledge
  • 3PAR knowledge
