Job Description

Executive Director – Interim Climate Change Committee

Permanent Role – Wellington Based

The Interim Climate Change Committee requires an Executive Director to lead the creation of an agency of real importance that will help New Zealand progress to a zero carbon economy.

The Interim Committee is mandated over the next year to prepare the analysis for the Climate Change Commission, which is due to start up in mid-2019. Government intends the Climate Change Commission to be an enduring entity that is valued for its rigour, credibility, ability to look across and engage with different sectoral perspectives in order to identify adjustment pathways going forward.

It is envisaged that the Executive Director will transition to a leadership role within the Commission, once it is established, to ensure continuity and continued forward movement.

What we are looking for:

The Executive Director will be able to develop a culture and mode of operating that will enable the Interim Committee to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to co-design effective ways for NZ to meet its Climate Change objectives. The tone set within the Interim Committee will be one of a number of critical legacies for the Climate Change Commission in 2019; so getting it right first time will be essential.

You will be instrumental in fostering relationships with the Chair, Committee members and Secretariat, and will have demonstrated experience working with boards.

In addition, you will have a strategic focus and provide clear and solid advice to the Chair and Committee members, to inform their decision making.

You will be a strong and experienced senior leader with ambitious expectations for yourself and your team; and will provide the leadership to ensure operational and strategic capability, agility and responsiveness.

You will be responsible for ensuring the quality and coherence of the consultation processes and the synthesis and positioning of the analysis will enable different sectors to adjust to a zero carbon world.

For legal purposes the Interim Committee will be a Ministerial Advisory Committee with the Ministry for the Environment responsible for financial reporting, employment and general statutory compliance. Day-to-day management of the Interim Committee is carried out by the Executive Director. The Interim Committee Chair and Members are responsible for governance and advice to Government. The Secretariat will support the work of the Interim Committee.
