About Ministry of Social Development 

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is the lead agency for the social sector.  We help the Government to set priorities across the sector, co-ordinate the actions of other social sector agencies and track changes in the social wellbeing of New Zealanders.  

About the Team 

MSD Legal provides professional legal advice and advocacy services to all areas of the Ministry.  This is an exciting opportunity to join our collaborative team of fun, friendly professionals focussed on providing high quality legal advice across the Ministry. You'll be part of a dedicated and supportive team.  

About the Role 

The Litigation team within MSD Legal Services works with Crown Law to manage higher court litigation including social security matters. It also advises on, claims resolution for historic abuse claims, human rights complaints and manages Privacy litigation. 

This role requires working alongside National Office clients to manage litigation and to advise on complaints and claims resolution.  Some experience advising on one or more of the following areas of law is desirable:  Social security matters, historic abuse claims, privacy and OIA matters and human rights complaints.

  • Strong communication skills
  • Able to build successful client and team relationships
  • Strong legal analysis skills
  • Enthusiasm for the law
  • A current New Zealand practising certificate (or be eligible to hold one)
  • Some legal experience would be preferable but not required
