  • For this position, the Commission is specifically seeking candidates with experience in Early Resolution.


This is a rare opportunity to join the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, as a Mediator in the Enquiries and Complaints team  

In this role, you will manage and process a caseload of discrimination complaints and other human rights matters, with a strong focus on Early Resolution*.

You will be required to use a variety of dispute resolution strategies, and be in direct telecommunication with the complainant and the respondent. You will also receive members of the public who drop in to the Human Rights Commission office with complaints and enquiries.

* Early Resolution in the context of the service offered by the Human Rights Commission is the processes, systems and strategies that provide an opportunity to reasonably resolve a complaint before any formal notification process and mediation meeting is required.


We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • effective application of modern dispute resolution skills, particularly Early Resolution techniques, and experience in mediation
  • knowledge of human rights, race relations, EEO or other social/justice areas 
  • the ability to use clear and effective two-way communication, spoken and written, with a wide range of people and in all situations
  • skill in listening
  • a flexible, analytical, and innovative approach to problem solving
  • ability to maintain accurate written records
  • impartiality and professionalism
  • awareness of the theories and conceptual underpinnings of mediation and dispute resolution
  • ability to engage in operational and policy work


In this role:

  • An appropriate recognised mediation qualification is desirable
  • Experience in any of the Commission's priority areas is beneficial
  • Understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to the work of the Commission is essential


About the Commission and its Enquiries and Complaints Team:

The Human Rights Commission, is the National Human Rights Institution for New Zealand, with various statutory functions under the Human Rights Act 1993 (“the HR Act”), including:

  • to advocate and promote respect for, and an understanding and appreciation of, human rights in New Zealand society;
  • to encourage the maintenance and development of harmonious relations between individuals and among the diverse groups in New Zealand society;
  • to promote understanding of the human rights dimensions of the Treaty of Waitangi through research, education programmes and discussion
  • to provide a dispute resolution service; and
  • to promote equal employment opportunities.

The Enquiries and Complaints team provides the dispute resolution service for complaints about compliance with the unlawful discrimination provisions of the HR Act and other human rights matters. This is done through receipt, analysis, classification, responding, facilitation, resolution and the documenting of the processes to the closure of the matter. These actions must be consistent with dispute resolution best practice, Commission processes, and the HR Act. The service is provided through various ways, particularly by telephone or in person.
