Job Description

Are you ready for new waters?

Maritime NZ is seeking an exceptional Senior Policy Advisor to join the Policy Development and System Design team in our Regulatory Systems Design Business Group.

About us

Maritime NZ is the national regulatory, compliance and response agency responsible for the safety, security and environmental protection of New Zealand's seas, rivers, and lakes.

What we do touches the lives of many New Zealanders, as well as international visitors and sea-borne traffic – on a daily basis. This is true whether you are a recreational boatie, a commercial operator, a port authority, a seafarer, or a regional council responding to an oil spill. Our maritime environment is vital to New Zealand's prosperity, security and social wellbeing – providing valuable employment, trade, tourism and recreational opportunities.

Our staff are located in nine regional offices and a Wellington head office, the Marine Pollution Response Centre in Auckland, and the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand in Lower Hutt.

Our mission is to lead and support the maritime community to take responsibility for ensuring our seas, rivers and lakes are safe, secure and clean, on behalf of all New Zealanders.

About the role

You will:

  • lead the analysis needed to develop maritime and marine protection legislation
  • look into policy issues and come up with possible solutions
  • analyse trends in the maritime sector, to make sure our regulatory and policy interventions are relevant, evidence-based, and keep up with emerging technologies.
  • provide advice to the Maritime NZ leadership team, the Minister of Transport, and other government officials
  • develop great working relationships with sector stakeholders, other agencies and decision makers.

To do this, you will engage with other government agencies, Maritime NZ operational staff, and sector representatives from across our wide range of activity.

Who we're looking for

You will have proven experience leading or substantively contributing to policy projects and providing advice to decision makers and a range of audiences. Your sound judgement and analytical skills will also identify the right interventions needed to keep New Zealand's seas safe, secure, and clean.

We are an organisation and sector where relationships matter. You will model our values of respect, integrity, and commitment, and work well with internal and external stakeholders to promote an integrated approach to policy and regulatory development in the transport, maritime and marine environmental sectors.

What we provide

Maritime NZ is a great place to work, with consistently high staff engagement results. We are rated in the top ten for public sector reputation in the most comprehensive research of its kind in New Zealand.

While we are here to get results, we aim for a supportive and collegial environment where you will be given training and other opportunities to grow and fulfill your potential. You will complete a six month on-boarding programme, attend an orientation workshop and obtain the Government Regulatory Practice Core Knowledge qualification.  We also have a suite of on-line learning modules to help you come up to speed with your role, a strong commitment to ongoing training through the Government Regulatory Practice Initiative, and an emerging leaders programme for staff who demonstrate potential to take a future leadership role.

Please review the position description and if you believe you have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online via the Maritime NZ Careers Page.  You will be required to complete an application form and submit a covering letter and CV.
