Senior Advisor, Financial Strategy – Permanent – Full time – Wellington


  • Are you a good at communicating financial information in easy to understand ways?

  • Are you great at writing and leading the conversation?


If so, we are looking for a Senior Advisor Financial Strategy to work in our Finance team. This is not an accounting role, instead we are looking for an articulate writer/speaker that understand finance and can help us lead those conversations in plain English.


About the Ministry of Social Development (MSD)


We help the Government to set priorities across the sector, co-ordinate the actions of other social sector agencies and track changes in the social wellbeing of New Zealanders.


About the Business Unit


We provide high level strategic advice and support to the Chief Executive and Leadership Team to ensure that effective Finance strategies are developed and properly integrated into all business strategies and plans.


About the role


The purpose of this position is to ensure that the financial implications of the Ministry's strategy are clearly articulated. This role will be responsible for the financial content of the Ministry's strategic documents including assisting in the annual external baseline budgeting cycle and internal budget cycle, and in conjunction with the Manager Strategic Finance and other key stakeholders, the Ministry-wide 4-year plans and business cases and Long Term Investment Plan. The role requires an excellent understanding of financial data and the ability to articulate the Ministry's financial strategy clearly in both written and oral form.


About you


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (able to present to small or large groups)
  • A good understanding of policy implementation and the issues likely to impact on it – including policy process
  • Highly developed analytical skills and an in-depth understanding of the finance arena
  • Demonstrated writing skills
  • Proven credibility, integrity and professionalism
  • Experience in supporting organisational strategic and business planning processes
