Launch your career with one of the largest public sector agencies in New Zealand. The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) Policy Graduate Programme gives you the opportunity to work on a wide range of policies that improve the lives of New Zealanders.  


The Policy branch brings together the Ministry's policy functions to provide thought-leading advice to the government.


We provide strategic policy advice across a range of topics and issues including: employment, income support, the transition of young people to adulthood, initiatives to support families and communities, issues faced by people with a disability, opportunities and challenges of an ageing population and social sector initiatives.


The Policy branch comprises the following groups: Community and Families Policy (including the Office for Disability Issues), Employment and Income Support and Seniors and International Policy (including Office for Seniors).


When you start at MSD as a graduate you a permanent member of staff. Throughout the 12-month graduate development programme you will:


  • Have two, six-month placements in different policy teams.
  • Be part of a supportive group of graduates all starting out their public sector careers.
  • Grow your networks by working across the Ministry and wider government.
  • Provide policy advice to Ministers and senior colleagues on a range of issues.
  • Receive ongoing mentoring, training and support.

How to apply


To be eligible for the programme it is essential you have a recent tertiary qualification, backed up by strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


We are looking for graduates from a range of disciplines including public policy, social sciences, economics and law and encourage applications.  Applications are welcome from students in their final year or those that have graduated within the last two years.


You will have clear, confident communication skills, sound relationship management abilities and a collaborative working style.


You must be available to attend an assessment day to be held on Tuesday 17th September in Wellington and to commence the programme in early February 2020.
