Job Description

Chief Executive (Tumu Whakarae), The Office for Māori Crown Relations - Te Arawhiti

The Office for Māori Crown Relations – Te Arawhiti (Te Arawhiti) is a departmental agency responsible for fostering strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across Government. Te Arawhiti's purpose is to look beyond the Treaty settlement process to shift the relationship between Government and Māori from one focused on historical grievance to one focused on maximising future opportunities for Aotearoa through genuine partnerships with Māori.

Achieving change requires decisive and active leadership to enable the renewed relationship established by Treaty settlements to flourish. We are looking for a highly experienced leader to be the Tumu Whakarae (Chief Executive) of Te Arawhiti. This person must be able to influence the environment in which Te Arawhiti operates; providing leadership to other government departments, community groups, and iwi to foster strong, ongoing and effective relationships with Māori across Government.

Te Arawhiti is the chief policy advisor to the Government regarding the Crown-Māori relationship and the Crown's Chief Negotiator to deliver Treaty settlements. The Tumu Whakarae must be a credible and a trusted advisor to Ministers and leaders, supporting the Crown to act fairly as a Treaty partner. The Tumu Whakarae will steer the organisation to new heights, by strengthening Te Arawhiti's relationship with Māori and building relevant capabilities across government. The Tumu Whakarae must be skilled in appreciation and application of Māori cultural identity and cultural values, and have an understanding and respect of Te Reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and kaupapa Māori.

Excellent leadership by Public Service chief executives is essential to high performing departments and a high performing Public Service. Chief executives are required to work collaboratively in a spirit of service and strive towards the overall goal of a system of world class, professional State Services, serving the Government of the day and meeting the needs of all New Zealanders.
