Job Description

The TEC - Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua - is a small Crown agency with a big job to do – to ensure New Zealanders have the skills and the knowledge they need to ensure lifelong success. We lead the Government's relationship with the tertiary education sector in New Zealand and provide career services from education to employment.


You may have recently heard of the Government's plan for vocational education, via the Reform of Vocational Education. The Reform of Vocational Education is the largest transformational change in the education sector in over 30 years aimed at creating a strong, unified, sustainable system for all vocational education.

The TEC-based team of the Reform of Vocational Education programme is looking for a capable, flexible and experienced Senior Advisor work on this high-profile reform programme until the end of 2019.


In this fast paced role, you'll do something different every day. You must have strong experience in a policy position, and you'll need to utilise your fantastic writing skills drafting internal and external documentation. You will have to get up to speed quickly, and be able to understand and process complex information.

This role provides a great opportunity for someone to move into a varied Senior Advisor position, and offers the perfect next step for someone wanting to be involved in a challenging and important programme of work.


What you will be doing?

  • Drafting a wide range of written material, including letters/communications material, answers to written parliamentary questions, briefings, information requests,
  • Ensuring that TEC contributes effectively to the reforms,
  • Undertaking interagency consultation and acting as a key touchstone across multiple agencies/departments,
  • Dealing with Machinery of Government requests,
  • Working to support senior level officials in the wider work programme, ensuring they are informed of ongoing developments (this includes programme reporting),
  • Producing a variety of advice and reviewing others' advice to ensure a consistent approach to the reform in line with Government's objectives,
  • Corresponding with key internal and external stakeholders,
  • Dealing with a wide range of ad-hoc requests, as needed, to ensure the Reform of Vocational Education programme keeps moving!


What will you bring to the role?

  • Your strong written communication skills, and experience writing accurate and engaging written content that is tailored for the audience, including internal and ministerial stakeholders
  • Your experience working and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • The ability to self-manage, juggle competing demands and prioritise work efficiently, and without direct supervision
  • A demonstrated ability for sound judgement and political nous, being able to identify risks (and potential mitigations)  
  • Experience working in a dynamic project environment
  • A great attitude, calm demeanour and friendly personality.
