Job Description

Principal Advisor - Māori, Communities and Partnerships
  • High level thought leadership, strategic and operational advice
  • Actively engage and support the Māori, Communities and Partnerships Group
  • Permanent National Office role

We have a fantastic new opportunity to work alongside the Manager and the wider Māori, Communities and Partnerships Group to provide high quality strategic, analytical and technical advice on key issues.

The role will mean working across a wide range of areas. Your week could range from providing input into the prevention of family violence, to giving advice around refugee and migrant settlement strategies, from developing thinking about community mobilisation in a NZ context, to responding to people trafficking, to looking at the development of wellbeing measures and developing practical tools to develop social and community development approaches.

The role is highly collaborative, and you will need the confidence and proven ability to develop and manage relationships at all levels across the Ministry, other Government agencies and the community.  You will demonstrate the ability to work at pace to deliver smart solutions to complex problems and provide pragmatic and effective advice.

Key attributes we are looking for:

  • Highly developed analytical skills with the ability to provide robust recommendations and develop policy
  • Provide high quality advice and subject matter expertise
  • Core relationship and stakeholder management skills
  • Sound judgment and the ability to influence at all levels
  • Ability to recognise and understand the circumstances and issues facing the communities the Ministry works with.

If you have a passion to help New Zealanders be safe, strong and independent and want to share your knowledge and experience, we'd like to hear from you. Experience in the development, implementation and delivery of services or programmes is desirable, as well as an ability to be culturally adaptive.

You will need excellent relationship management skills and be able to translate community issues into co-designed solutions that can be understood by multiple audiences. You will also be able to demonstrate your ability to develop practical solutions for complex problems with a focus on getting the job done!

In addition to supporting the Manager with high quality advice, part of your role will include building relationships with key government stakeholders, internal ministry staff, the NGO sector and communities. This means you are an effective communicator in addition to an excellent relationship manager with a collaborative work ethic and values that align to MSD's priorities.

In addition, you will also work collaboratively with diverse communities and ensure that solutions designed at the local level are supported and reflected in the Ministry's commitment to supporting great settlement.

If this sounds like you, and you're ready to either take a step up, or take on the next set of challenges in your career, then we want to hear from you!
